Delightful things can happen when singer-songwriters decide to write pop songs. Way back in the day, alternative darlings R.E.M. shattered their mold and gave us “Shiny Happy People” and “Stand.” In 2002 Canadian songwriter Sarah Slean followed suit. Slean’s sophomore release Night Bugs (2002) features a surprise. Tucked between the haunting ballads with which she made her name is a song called “Sweet Ones.” At once a pop confection, an anti-establishment call to arms, a love song, and a full-out excuse to rock, it’s guaranteed to take over your playlists for a day or two.
